Marina del Rey is an unincorporated pocket of LA County, sandwiched between Venice and Playa del Rey. It's organized around the largest man-made small-craft harbor in North America (about 5,300 boat slips) and is mostly mid-rise condos and apartments built in the 1970s-1990s, with a steady wave of newer construction along the waterfront. There are essentially no single-family neighborhoods.
MdR renters skew older than Venice or Santa Monica — empty nesters, retirees, boat owners, and a meaningful corporate / aviation presence (LAX is 10 minutes away). Smaller share of families because the housing stock is dominated by 1-bed and 2-bed condos. Tech professionals from Playa Vista (just south, the 'Silicon Beach' campus area) often rent here.
Daily life is unusually calm by Westside standards. Most of the housing fronts the harbor or the Marina Peninsula. Mother's Beach (a small, calm-water family beach) and Burton Chace Park are walkable from most apartments. There's no Metro rail in MdR — the closest stop is Culver City E Line, ~15 minutes by bus. Marine layer cools mornings; afternoons clear. Bike path connects MdR to Santa Monica north and El Segundo south along the coast.

Small calm-water beach inside the harbor, family-friendly, no waves.
Public waterfront park at the harbor mouth — picnic areas, summer concert series.
Replica New England fishing village retail and dining strip on the waterfront — currently being redeveloped.

No — MdR is unincorporated LA County, governed by the County rather than a city. Practical effect: services come from the County, not LA city. Sheriff (LASD) handles policing rather than LAPD.
Yes — the Venice border is at Washington Boulevard, walkable from most northern MdR addresses. The Venice Canals are 10 minutes on foot. The boardwalk is 15-20 minutes.
MdR itself has very limited residential school-age population (mostly condos). Public school families generally enroll in adjacent LAUSD schools (Coeur d'Alene Elementary in Mar Vista) or private options.
Generally no. Boats are mostly stationary and quiet; the harbor is a calm-water marina, not a working port. The bigger noise factor is LAX flight paths — apartments on the south side of MdR can hear plane noise, especially during west-flow operations. Our scouts measure dB and note the orientation.
Generally similar or slightly less, but the housing product is different — MdR is mostly newer mid-rise condos with full amenities (pools, gyms, garage parking), while Venice has more historic single-family or duplex. If you want the amenity-building lifestyle on the Westside, MdR has better options at comparable rent to a Venice walk-up.
